About Us

Julie and Michael Dunkel are determined to be successful business owners that provide merchandise and services to Cadillac and surrounding communities.

Lifelong hobbyists, she is skilled in sewing, cross-stitching, crocheting, matting and framing, and he a woodworker, machinist, and graphic artist.  Julie and Michael are a match with their creativity.  Married in 1992, the couple has channeled their passion for creating into not one, but two businesses.

Michael is the owner of Dynamic Signs, a graphic sign company which feeds his passion for design and construction.  Julie is a 2006 graduate of our own Baker College here in Cadillac.  She graduated with a Bachelor Degree in Business Leadership with a concentration in Accounting.  Julie has turned her creative passion into her employment.  Northern Hearth Quilting & Sewing Center opened its doors on July 3rd, 2014 at 115 N. Mitchell St. in downtown Cadillac.

While any new business is a challenge, Julie has formed a strong team to surround her.  “We have Susan Wilcox, Sally Monzon and Dawn Paulin who provide significant quilting expertise.  Suzie as they call her has wonderful personality, with enthusiasm for the craft and is teaching classes. Sally is a powerhouse sewer as she gets our sample quilt made in no time at all.  Dawn provides a wealth of knowledge with her experience as an adjunct professor at Baker College along with being a lead with the Northern Camper magazine and other community organizations.  These women add enthusiam to the craft and a passion to help others in everything they do.

Mike is another powerful resource with his skills and talents.  Mike has a quiet demeanor that allows listen to the customers needs.  He has become certified with Janome as an authorized service technician and is repairing all sewing machines for the business.

"Customers come first, and their needs and wants are my priority!"

“With Mike’s woodworking talents, he made all the cabinetry for the quilt store,” she said.  The dark chocolate brown of the wood enhances the appearance of the store and creates rich contrasts with the fabrics on display.

Julie has a passion for quilting and needle crafts and an old fashioned approach to customer service, it won’t be long until Northern Hearth becomes a significant quilter’s destination in northern and central Michigan.  Her dream is to create a draw to Cadillac, for all needlework projects.  “I want to build my business on customer service.  For far too long businesses have had to strive for convenience, speed and price.  I have always felt strongly about quality and customer service at fair pricing.  I will pay a little more for those fundamentals.  I miss those winter days of the fuel pump attendant.  Customers come first and their needs and wants are my priority,” she said.
